چکیده

We develop a more general methodology for a dual photoelastic modulator (PEM) system that is used for the determination of the Stokes parameters of an arbitrary light beam. This allows for a degree of arbitrariness in the setting of the retardation amplitudes of both PEMs, thus permitting a robust and effective optimization of the detection system. Various experimental issues are considered and a calibration procedure is described that ensures accurate measurement of the absolute values of the Stokes parameters. Measurements of the Faraday rotation of a CoPt multilayer film are provided as a demonstration of the sensitivity of the dual-PEM system. © 2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 120.2130, 230.3810.

Experimental validation of optimum input polarization states for Mueller matrix determination with a dual photoelastic modulator polarimeter.

Dual photoelastic modulator polarimeters can measure light polarization, which is often described as a Stokes vector. By evaluating changes in polarization when light interacts with a sample, the sample Mueller matrix also can be derived, completely describing its interaction with polarized light. The choice of which and how many input Stokes vectors to use for sample investigation is under the...

Optimum selection of input polarization states in determining the sample Mueller matrix: a dual photoelastic polarimeter approach.

Dual photoelastic modulator polarimeter systems are widely used for the measurement of light beam polarization, most often described by Stokes vectors, that carry information about an interrogated sample. The sample polarization properties can be described more thoroughly through its Mueller matrix, which can be derived from judiciously chosen input polarization Stokes vectors and corresponding...

Generalized theory and application of Stokes parameter measurements made with a single photoelastic modulator

We report in this paper a generalized theory that describes the interaction between a monochromatic light beam and an optical system that includes one photoelastic modulator, one analyzer, and one photodetector. Based on the theory, a detailed four-step procedure is presented, which allows a precise measurement of the four Stokes parameters. An analysis of the systematic and random errors arisi...

Photoelastic Determination of Mixed Mode Stress Intensity Factors

A two dimensional finite model with inclined crack at different crack angles are being analyzed in mixed mode condition using photo elasticity method for the determination of Stress Intensity Factors. The well-known Sih’s equation and three points deterministic approach is used for the determination of stress intensity factors. The effects of biaxial load factor, crack angle, size factors were ...

High-accuracy spectropolarimetric imaging using photoelastic modulator-based cameras with low-polarization coatings

Under NASA's Instrument Incubator Program (IIP), we are developing an electro-optical imaging approach to enable multiangle, multispectral, and polarimetric measurements of tropospheric aerosol column abundances and microphysical properties. From low Earth orbit, the measurements would be acquired from the ultraviolet to shortwave infrared at ~1 km spatial resolution over a broad swath. To achi...
